You live by the three and die by the three. The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team who shoots as many three-point shots as any team in the country, did that tonight but unfortunately for the Buccaneers there was a lid on the rim as they fell to Eastern Oregon tonight 85-55 on day one of the Lewis-Clark State Classic in Lewiston, Idaho.
Park Gilbert averaged over 12 three-point shots made last year, but struggled to find the range tonight, only making 1-16 in the first half and finishing 4-29 from beyond the arc.
In the first half the Bucs only managed 21 points their lowest point total in a first half in Coach Ben York's three seasons. It's the lowest point total in a half since the Bucs only scored 17 points in the second half against Saint Katherine in the 23-24 season.
The second half saw some more scoring for the Bucs as they notched almost as many points (20) in the third quarter as they did in the first half, but still found the basket closed from long range shooting 1-6. The Bucs also struggled to hold down the EOU offense allowing 27 points to the Mountaineers which enabled them to increase their lead.
The final frame saw the Bucs make two more three-pointers but after outscoring the Mountaineers 10-7 early in the quarter, only finished with 14 points.
As a team the Buccos finished the game shooting 30 percent (19-64) from the floor, 14 percent (4-29) from three-point range and 65 percent (13-20) from the charity stripe. The Bucs only had four assists on the evening showcasing how tough a night it was from the floor for Park Gilbert.
Individually, Freshman Symirah Gray posted a team high 12 points, while junior transfer Allie Cummings chipped in with 8 points.
Jelissa Julmist corralled 7 rebounds on the night to lead the team.
The good news is Park has a chance to get right back on the floor tomorrow. The bad news? They have to face No. 7 Lewis-Clark State on their home floor tomorrow afternoon starting at 5 p.m. Arizona time.
