Buccaneers Clear Bethel University in Double Header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mesa, Ariz. – The Buccaneer softball team at Park Gilbert had yet another historic night, this time against the Pilots of Bethel University, finishing with the programs biggest margin of victory in a 17-0 win.

Park opened up the afternoon with a successful six run inning that gave them a quick edge over the Pilots. Gabby Romero got comfortable early on with a grand slam to put the Buccaneers up by four. The Bucs tacked on two more to wrap up the first.

The offense continued to thrive by throwing up two-spots in the second and third. Even though Park was set up to mercy rule the Pilots after three innings, they finished off their competition with seven in the fourth.

Romero finished with 6 RBI on the day, and each of the starting nine had a hit. Not a single Buccaneer struck out, either, as the offense completely dominated throughout the day.

Pitching was solid as well, as Mariah Martinez twirled another solid game, going four innings while allowing just two hits. Christian Smith finished the game with a clean inning in the fifth as the Bucs walked off the field, another mercy rule victory under their belts.

If one mercy rule wasn't enough, the Bucs made it two with another dominant offensive display.

The Bucs opened up scoring in the second inning as catcher Raylissa Garcia reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Romero. A Carolina Olivas sacrifice fly scored Natalie Castro, giving them a 2-0 lead.

The third inning saw the Bucs send two into the stratosphere, growing their lead to five. Danielle Farinas had a two-run shot, then was quickly followed by Castro's first home run of the year, a solo shot.

The Bucs hung up one in the fifth to extend their lead to six. Olivas added her second and third RBI in the sixth on a two-run single, getting the Bucs to the eighth run needed for the mercy rule.

Abril Nerey had another strong outing following her solid appearance on Friday, helping the Bucs to their fourth win in two days. She went all six innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out two.

After a week of practice, the Buccaneers will return to play with two days worth of double headers against Simpson University on March 4 and 5 respectively. These games mark their first round of conference competition.
