Buccaneers Fire On All Cylinders In Shutout of Antelope Valley

It takes a well-rounded effort to beat a baseball team like Antelope Valley, who came into Friday's matchup with the Park University Gilbert baseball team batting .337. Luckily for the Buccaneers, they were firing on all cylinders with a 10-0, run-rule win over the Pioneers.

The Buccaneers' dominant performance started on the mound, where Nick Marcon finally found a groove that he had been looking for all season. In six innings pitched, his final line included seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts- an impressive feat against a disciplined Pioneers lineup.

Marcon's performance was nothing short of masterful, but it came with some hiccups. In the second inning, he got two quick outs before the Pioneers loaded the bases. He sat down the first two batters of the third as well before putting two on; he forced ground outs to end both threats.

Danger loomed again in the fourth when the Pioneers led off with a double to deep center, but Marcon stayed on point and fanned the next three batters; it ended when he snagged a scalding hot line drive from the Pioneers' leadoff man and dodged having to pitch to the heart of their order with runners on.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers backed up Marcon with six runs. They were the beneficiary of a series of first inning defensive blunders to give them a 3-0 lead in the first. Aaron and Alex Stinnett hit leadoff singles before a wild pitch advanced them, followed by an E2 that scored Chris Amador (courtesy running for Alex) and Aaron Stinnett.  Another unearned run came across when Julian Garcia-Schroeder, who reached via walk, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the shortstop.

The Buccaneers' first earned run scored in the third inning Garcia-Schroeder scored his second run of the day; he reached on a hit by pitch and picked up the next three bases on wild pitches.

A 4-0 lead would have been enough for the win, but the Buccaneers tacked on two in each of the final three innings for good measure.

In the sixth inning, Joel Adamson and Aaron Lizarraga singled and scored when Alex Stinnett laced a double down the left field line. The seventh inning saw Joey Martinez and Travis Moore draw walks; they scored when Lizarraga and Adamson singled and doubled, respectively.

The final two runs came across when Garcia-Schroeder singled through the right side to move Cade Maestas and Amador before an E9 allowed the latter to score and gave the Buccaneers enough for a run-rule win.

The only downside of the early victory was that Jose Zubia came up one inning short of a save opportunity. Zubia had a stellar outing hismelf in relief of Marcon, throwing the final two, scoreless frames and notching a strikeout.

Four (Aaron Stinnett, Alex Stinnett, Lizarraga and Adamson). Alex Stinnett and Adamson led the way with three each, while Aaron Stinnett rewrote the school record books by extending his hit streak to 12- the longest in Park Gilbert history.

The Buccaneers are now 7-6 in conference play; the win also marked their first home win of the season.

What's Next: The Buccaneers finish up the series with a doubleheader against the Pioneers tomorrow at 11 a.m at Tempe Diablo Stadium Field 1.
