Turnovers Doom Shorthanded Bucs 75-65

Box Score

The Injury/Illness bug has been a thorn in the side of the Park University Gilbert women's basketball team all season long.  It seems every time it looks as though they might be able to get back to a full rotation, something derails the best laid plans.  Playing with only seven healthy players, Buccaneers (13-8, 4-2) fell to Antelope Valley (5-15, 2-5) 75-65 this evening at the Pioneer Events Center in Lancaster, Calif.

The Buccaneers were without junior Macy Markus, Madison Chappell and Carlee Meiner who are in health and safety protocols.  Kianna Turenne and Elise Young are still out with ankle injuries and senior point guard Destinee Vigil only played five minutes as she continues to nurse a bum ankle.

Park Gilbert played three strong quarters, only trailing by one at halftime and after the third quarter, but it seems as though they lost their legs in the fourth quarter, only scoring 10 points and shooting 20 percent from the floor.

Another big killer for the Bucs is an issue they have been dealing with all season, and that is turnovers. Park committed 26 turnovers which the Pioneers turned into 26 points.

Offensively, the reigning Cal Pac Player of the Week, Kayla Schroeder continued her torrid pace, setting a new career high for points with 24 and posting her first career double-double by leading the in rebounds with 10.

Jasmine Kelly and Valerie Van Dijk both added 11 points and six rebounds. Hayley Valencia posted nine points and eight rebounds.

The team does not have much time to lick its wounds after this defeat as they take on La Sierra tomorrow night as they attempt to get back on the winning track after having its five-game winning streak snapped.
