Park University Gilbert freshman guard Symirah Gray was named GSAC Freshman of the Year in a vote by coaches announced today by the Great Southwest Athletic Conference.
Gray becomes the second freshman in school history to be named conference freshman of the year. Kayla Schroeder was named freshman of the year in the California Pacific Conference in 2021-22.
Gray had a solid freshman campaign, averaging 8.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Her slashing style and ability to get to the rim also allowed her to lead the team in free throw attempts with 71. This is the second most free throw attempts in a season by a freshman in school history. Â Her 52 made free throws is also second most in a season by a freshman. Gray also was second on the team in field goals made and points scored this season.
Gray played in all 24 games the Bucs played this season and had 11 double-digit scoring games including a career high 20 points against Navajo Tech. She led the team in scoring five times and assists twice.
"From the moment we saw her play in high school, it was obvious how special of a player and person Symirah is," said Buccaneers Head Coach Ben York. "Not only is she a dynamic scorer, she's an incredible teammate and emerging leader. Symirah earned the respect of her Park teammates and coaches immediately. She has worked extremely hard and I couldn't be happier for the recognition she received from other coaches in our conference."
Gray will join seniors Allie Cummings and Julissa Julmist as the top three returning scorers for the Bucs in the 2026-27 season.
