Strong Second Half Leads WBB Over SAGU-AIC 85-51

Box Score

Back at home and back in the win column.  The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team broke its five-game losing streak, beating SAGU-AIC 85-51 at The PHHacility in Phoenix, Ariz., Tuesday evening.

The Buccaneers were coming off four consecutive games versus Division I and II competition which led to four of the five losses in the losing streak.  But what those games did was gird the Buccaneers against adversity and the Bucs faced some in the second quarter.  After jumping out to 21-6 lead after the first quarter, Park Gilbert went ice cold in the second period, only making three shots from the floor, shooting 25 percent. On the other end of the court, the Warriors were finding their range knocking down 50 percent of their field goal attempts and outscoring the Bucs 18-9 in the quarter to cut the margin from 15 to six.

The second half saw Park Gilbert right the ship as it tried to take advantage of its height and length advantage over SAGU.  The Bucs shot 60 percent (9-15) from the floor in the third quarter and 81 percent in the fourth frame as they blew the game open, outscoring the Warriors 55-27 in the second half.

For the game, the Bucs finished shooting 54 percent from the floor as they scored the majority of their points in the paint.  For the first time in its history, Park Gilbert failed to make at least two three-point shots in a game. The Bucs went 1-12 from beyond the arc. The Buccos also managed to get to the line 28 times in the game, making 21, compared to 14 trips to the charity stripe for the Warriors, making 10.

Park managed to force 32 SAGU turnovers on the evening, but returned the favor almost mistake for mistake committing 28 turnovers itself. This is the third game the Buccaneers have forced their opponents into 30 or more turnovers.

Junior Macy Markus led the Bucs in scoring with 21 points, her season and career high.  Freshman Haley Valencia also set her career high for points with 19 points and she also reeled in five boards and had three steals. Elise Young poured in 11 points before re-aggravating an ankle injury suffered last Saturday at Colorado State University-Pueblo.  Kayla Schroeder led the team with seven rebounds and four steals to go along with seven points. Jayla Reliford also had four steals to lead the team to go along with four assists and six points.

The Buccaneers will next be in action this Friday and Saturday as they host the Buccaneer Classic on November 27 and 28 at The PHHacility.  Embry Riddle, Southwestern Christian and Lincoln will be in attendance with the Bucs playing Southwestern Christian on Friday and Lincoln on Saturday.  Both of the Bucs games will start at noon following Embry Riddle playing against the same two teams at 10 a.m. both days.
