Millimeters make the difference between winning and losing a basketball game or making a shot to tie or win the game. The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team (2-3) missed a game tying three-point basket as time expired to fall to fourth-ranked The Master's University (2-0) 57-54 in a hotly contested game at the ACU Events Center in Glendale, Ariz.
"This game goes to show what this team can do," said Buccaneers head coach Jeff Fore. "It shows playing those division one games benefited us against a really good (The Master's) team."
The Buccaneers and Mustangs went back and forth with both teams holding leads throughout the game. Park Gilbert led by as many as six early and The Master's did the same late with a nine-point advantage. A few possessions made the difference down the stretch.
"That game came down to six possessions," said Fore. "Three on each end. We missed three chippies on our end which is six points, and we made three mistakes on the defensively hedging on as down screen which led to three three-pointers."
Offensively, this game saw the return of the Elise Young the Buccaneers saw all of last year as she led the Bucs with 20 points. Her 19th game with 20 or more points, but her first game with that many points this season.
"She (Elise) is starting to get her legs back and her feel back," said Fore. "With everything she has gone through this year, it was nice to see her back."
Destinee Vigil played all 40 minutes for the Bucs tonight and almost posted a triple double with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. She also added four steals. Her six assists are a career high and ties the team record.
Freshman center Kayla Avalos scored a career high 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Senior Marlene Salazar led the team on the glass with 10.
Neither team shot the ball well from the floor, with both teams shooting a paltry 30 percent from the field, 20 percent from the three (20 for The Master's and 22 percent for Park) and both teams shot in the 60 percent range from the charity stripe (68 for The Master's, 60 for Park Gilbert).
Up next for the Buccaneers is a matchup with a familiar foe SAGU-AIC. The Bucs have already beaten them two times this season and look to get a third on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at the PHHacilty at 5 p.m. ahead of the men's team game against The Master's at 8 p.m.
