Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bucs defeat SAGU-AIC for the third time this season, 96-69.

After 27 and 17-point victories over SAGU-AIC  earlier this season, a 96-69 victory for the Park University Gilbert women's basketball team felt like business as usual.

"I'm really proud of the way we played tonight," Buccaneers head coach Jeff Fore said. "It was a really solid performance from start to finish and I think some of the confidence we've built up in our last few games really showed tonight."

In what was possibly the Buccaneers' most dominant first half performance of the season, the Buccaneers took an early lead and never relinquished it.

The Buccaneers outshot the Warriors 50 percent (16-32) to 31 percent (12-38), which allowed them to push the lead to as many as 24 points and take a comfortable 16-point lead into halftime.

Momentum remained on the Buccaneers' side in the second half, as they outscored the Warriors 50 to 38. The 96 points by the Buccaneers was their best scoring performance of the season and their second best of all time. The score also topped October's 89-point outing versus the Warriors.

Their 53 percent shooting outing was accompanied by a valiant effort on the glass. Led by Marlene Salazar and Destinee Vigil with nine each, the Bucs notched 56 rebounds compared to the Warriors' 29 rebounds.

After a difficult start to the season, Elise Young posted 28 points (13-17) and five rebounds, as she built on her solid showing against The Master's over the weekend. Meanwhile, Destinee Vigil flirted with a triple-double for the second game in a row. Her eight assists broke her own school record and allowed the Buccaneers to set a new team record for assists in a game with 24.

Providing two spark plugs off the bench, Anna Laux added 10 points and freshman guard Aubrey Avery scored a career high 12 points.

"Our depth is something I'm really looking forward to seeing become even more apparent in our play as the season goes on," Fore said. "I think tonight was just a sample of how good our bench can really be."

The Buccaneers (3-3) now have 12 days off before taking on Western New Mexico University on Sunday, January 24th.
