The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team fell this afternoon in an exhibition contest against Grand Canyon University 106-55 at the GCU Arena.
"That's a solid Division I team," said Buccaneers Head Coach Jeff Fore. "We had too many turnovers and did not have an answer for their center in the paint."
The Buccaneers kept things close once again in the first half just as they did at Dixie State, only trailing by seven after the first quarter and by 15 at the half. The second half got away from them as they gave up 57 second half points which tied for the most points allowed by the Bucs in a half.
Offensively, Park Gilbert was led offensively by Destinee Vigil who scored 20 points with five assists and four rebounds. Elise Young added 12 points as the only other Bucs player in double digits scoring.
The Bucs only shot 33 percent from the floor and 25 percent from the three. They did shoot the highest number of three pointers in a game (35) in their history. Vigil hoisted 10 three-pointers which was one short of a team record.
What ultimately doomed the Bucs were turnovers and points in the pain, as they committed 32 miscues which turned into 38 Antelope points and GCU scored 82 of their 106 points in the paint (77 percent).
For the Antelopes, freshman center Katie Scott scored 28 points as one of five GCU players who scored in double figures.
Up next for the Buccaneers is the fourth-ranked NAIA team in the country, The Master's University on Friday, January 8. The game will be played at Arizona Christian University in Glendale, Ariz., starting at 6 p.m.
