GILBERT, Ariz. – The Park University Gilbert softball team split a pair of games on day 2 of the Sterling Softball Scramble held at Cactus Yards. In game one behind a complete game four-hitter from Kylee Saunders, the Bucs got their first shutout of the season, 7-0 over Dawson Community College. In the final game of the day, the Bucs fell to Park University 7-3.
Game 1 – Park Gilbert 7, Dawson CC 0
The Buccaneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings in game one. Bookend home runs by Danae Villareal (solo) and Michele Dinicola (two-run) helped pace the early scoring. Dinicola's homer was her third home run in as many days.
But the story of this game was the dominant pitching performance in the circle from Saunders (1-0). Only making her second start as a Buccaneer, Saunders went the distance, allowing only four hits and struck out five. Only one Dawson runner reached third base on the afternoon.
Game 2 Park Univ. 7, Park Gilbert 3
The Pirates came out with something to prove after falling to the Bucs in the opener of the tournament yesterday.
The Pirates put six runs on the board before the Buccaneers could answer. But many of those runs came due to Park Gilbert miscues as the Bucs had four errors on the game. Of the seven runs the Bucs allowed only three of them were earned.
Makenzie Celeya and Claudia Telles both recorded a multi-hit game. Celeya had one of the better highlights of the afternoon as she doubled down the left field line and after the ball was misplayed by the Pirates left fielder, Celeya was able to come all the way around to score.
Dezire Garcia (1-3) was the hard luck loser, pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing six runs (2 earned) on six hits.
