GLENDALE, Ariz. - Park University Gilbert showed improved efficiency, hitting .282 with 32 kills in a three-set win over Southwest Assemblies of God University (SAGU-American Indian), beating the Warriors 25-17, 25-12, 25-16 on day two of the ACU Firestorm Labor Day Invitational in Glendale. The win came after a three-set loss to host Arizona Christian - 25-21, 25-21, 25-15.
The Buccaneers (5-5) had double-digit outings from Kendra Zuckerman (21 kills vs. ACU) and Kayla Wieserman (11 kills vs. SAGU), while Laynie Rodriguez, Daja Jackson and Olivia Jackson had seven digs each in the win over SAGU, one behind Jenifer Lauer, who had 10 assists and eight digs against the Warriors.
Arizona Christian managed to beat the Buccaneers with three double-figure offensive performances, led by Oriana Montoya's 11 kills, as the Firestorm jumped out to big leads in the first and second sets before coming from behind to beat Park in the third. The Buccaneers led 5-3 in the third on a kill by Zuckerman, but ACU used a 5-0 run to separate the final set, winning 25-15 on Amanda Bakonyi's kill to move ACU to 4-2 on the season.
The Buccaneers avoided a weekend sweep by keeping SAGU winless, at 0-6, building an 11-1 lead in the first set with Olivia Jackson at the service line, leading wire-to-wire in a 25-17 victory to open the match. Chyna Carter sealed the set with a kill, and Jackson was back at it in the second, picking up an ace to build a 7-1 lead on the way to a 25-12 win that ended on a 9-0 run for the Buccaneers.
Bree-Lynn Taylor's kill late in the set made it a double-digit game, 22-12, and Jenifer Lauer put down an ace to set up set point. The Buccaneers went on to win the match with another big run and double-digit lead, up 24-12 in the third on an ace by Macey Balas.
Park U Gilbert rounds out the Labor Day weekend with a Sunday home match, hosting Montana State-Northern at noon, inside The Nest at San Tan Charter. The game will air at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/parkbuccaneers.
