Volleyball Beats MSU-N to Begin Week but Falls in Rematch with BenU Mesa; Reserves Beat OUAZ, BenU

GILBERT, Ariz. - Park University Gilbert avenged a weekend loss to Montana State-Northern with a four-set win Sunday at The Nest, and Wednesday, the Buccaneers were unable to win two-straight over BenU Mesa, falling to the Redhawks in three sets. The reserves were also in action, beating OUAZ in four, followed by a three-set (2-1) win over Benedictine-Mesa Wednesday night.. One more match is on the slate, this week, as Embry-Riddle visits The Nest Friday night at 6 p.m. 

 

BUCCANEERS 3, MONTANA STATE-NORTHERN 1 (25-15,27-25,20-25,25-21)

Park U Gilbert had a pair of players reach double figures, led by Autumn Wood's 14-kill, 16-dig double-double and another 10 kills from Kendra Zuckerman, taking out Montana State-Northern in four sets two days after falling to the Skylights at ACU's Labor Day Invitational. 

Both Buccaneer setters recorded double-doubles, as well, as Bella Valdez had 14 assists and 11 digs, while Jenifer Lauer went for 20 assists and 14 digs. Mackenzie Seitz led the defense with 24 digs, while Gabriela Morales added 17. 

The Bucs ran away with the opening set, building a 17-10 lead after a block by Sabrina Garces and Asha Harris, ending the first on a 4-0 run with Laynie Rodriguez at the service line, as blocks from Zuckerman, Kayla Weiser and Garces wrapped up the opening frame 25-15. In the second, neither team led by more than four, and the Buccaneers trailed 14-12 on a service error before rolling off the next four points to go up 16-14. Wieserman and Claire Fisher managed to finish the set with kills after MSUN tied it at 25, a 27-25 win to go up 2-0 in the match. 

Park lost the third, 25-20, but the Buccaneers bounced back in the fourth, leading 18-11 before holding off a Skylight run to win 25-21. 

 

BENEDICTINE-MESA 3, PARK U GILBERT 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15)

Benedictine University at Mesa avenge a loss earlier in the season in three sets, Wednesday night, beating Park University Gilbert 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 at The Nest. 

The Buccaneers (6-6) earned just 22 kills and hit below .100, while Ben U Mesa out-blocked the Buccaneers 5-4 and outscored Park U Gilbert 56-31 in the match. 

Katie Nice led the offensive effort for the Redhawks with 14 kills, while Annabelle Somoza distributed 23 assists. Autumn Wood led the Buccaneers with 14 kills, while Bella Valdez had 15 assists and Mackenzie Seitz finished with 10 digs.
