MESA, Ariz. - The Park-Gilbert Buccaneers delivered a dominant performance in their home opener Thursday night, defeating Nelson University (AZ), 6-2, at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa. The Buccaneers came out with high energy and quickly established control of the match, scoring four goals in the opening half.
Sarai Mizzell opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the match, giving the Bucs an early 1-0 lead. Park-Gilbert continued to apply pressure, with
Emma Beach,
Darienne Thompson, and Mizzell each finding the back of the net again before halftime. The Buccaneers entered the break with a commanding 4-0 advantage.
Nelson responded early in the second half, scoring twice to cut into the deficit, but Park-Gilbert quickly regained control. Dameris Canto Parker scored twice in the second half, including the final goal of the night, to complete the 6-2 victory.
The Buccaneers' offensive numbers highlighted their dominance. Park-Gilbert finished with an impressive 46 total shots and 24 shots on goal, compared with just two shots and two shots on goal for Nelson. The Bucs also earned 18 corner kicks while keeping Nelson from earning a corner throughout the match.

Neveah Dunlap throughout the match. The defensive effort in front of them kept Nelson from creating many dangerous opportunities, as the Warriors managed only two shots on target.
The win moves the Buccaneers to 2-1-0 on the young season and gives the team plenty of momentum heading into another home matchup. The Buccaneers return to Arizona Athletic Grounds on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. to take on Justice University for senior night.
