Bucs Set School Record in Rebounds in Win over LPU

The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team picked up its second consecutive win in conference play, beating Life Pacific University 59-34 at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler, Ariz., this afternoon.

The Buccaneers even its record on the season at 8-8 and move to 3-4 in the Great Southwest athletic Conference. Park also moves its record to 3-0 at Chandler-Gilbert CC over the past two seasons.  Life Pacific drops to 9-9 and 1-6 in conference play.

The Bucs got off to a strong start, going on a 14-0 run to open play. The Warriors did not score its first basket until there was 2:50 remaining in the first quarter. Park ended the first frame with a 16-4 lead.

Over the next three periods, Park outscored Life Pacific in each quarter and only allowed the Warriors 10 points in each frame. Park outscored Life 43-30 over the last three quarters.

The Buccos did not shoot lights out only making 31 percent of its shots. But they managed to shut down the Warriors offense, holding them to a season-low 34 points scored and 20 percent field goal percentage from the floor.  

The Bucs dominated on the boards, pulling down a school-record 66 rebounds. The previous record was 64 in a double overtime game at LaVerne in the Bucs inaugural season.

Hemani Kalia led the team with 11 points, while Alynna Palacios grabbed 14 rebounds. Kiley Bush also set a career-high for rebounds with 12.

The Bucs return to the road, traveling to California to take on the top two teams by record in the conference. They face The Master's University (5-1) on Thursday, Jan. 22 and Hope International (6-0) on Saturday, Jan. 24.
