MESA, Ariz. --- The Park University Gilbert men's basketball team (3-5, 0-1) lost at home to the Nelson University Arizona Warriors (7-5) by a score of 65-60, Tuesday night at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz.
This game proved to be a tale of two halves, as the Buccaneers took their largest first-half lead since their season-opener against West Coast Baptist on Oct. 29. But the Warriors shot 58.6% in the second half and stormed back to take this defensive struggle of a contest.
Both teams combined for just 52 points in the first half, as Park-Gilbert and Nelson shot 34.3% and 24.1% respectively. Guard Eli Fleming was a key reason the Bucs shot 40% from downtown in that frame, as Fleming knocked down three of four triples in the first half. Freshman guard Stephan Ironshell added eight points in just four first-half minutes.
In the second half, Park-Gilbert's field goal percentage took a slight jump from 34.3% to 34.6% but the Buccaneers struggled from the perimeter; going 1-10 from three-point land.
Three Buccaneers recorded double-digit scoring figures. Forward Tyson Banks led the Bucs in scoring with 13 points as he shot 5-8 from the field with four rebounds. Fleming finished with a season-high 12 points, leading the team with four three-pointers made. Guard Tanner Pate played all but two minutes, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds.
Overall, the Bucs shot 34.4% from the field and 28% from downtown. The Park-Gilbert bench scored 29 points, 20 of which came from Fleming and Ironshell.
The Buccaneers return to the court this weekend, as the team hits the road for Cali. They head to Anaheim, Calif., to face the Bethesda University of California (0-7) at 8 p.m. MST.
