Game Recap: Softball |

Bucs Drop 2 to No. 19 HIU

The Park University Gilbert softball team dropped a pair of games to 19th-ranked Hope International University this morning at Arizona Athletic Grounds, losing game one 4-0 and game two 9-1 in five innings.

Of the Buccaneers first six games, four of them have been against teams ranked in the top 25. The dropped their first two games to No. 13 College of Idaho. The Bucs now sit at 1-6 on the season.

Game 1 – Hope International 4, Park Gilbert 0

The Buccaneers were one-hit in game one by Royals starter Allie Puente who struck out 13 without walking a batter.

The Bucs lone hit came off the bat of Aubrey Chavez who stroked a high line drive that was almost caught by the Royals leaping second baseman, but just glanced off of her glove. Puente faced just two hitters over the minimum.

In the circle for the Bucs, Christian Smith had another strong start only allowing two runs in 3.2 innings of work, striking out three. Abril Nerey pitched the last 3.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned)

HIO got on the board in the fourth with two outs using small ball. A bunt single and a walk put a runner in scoring position before a single got the opening run home. Then a double steal scored the second.

They tacked on one in the fifth, facilitated by an error and one more in the seventh,

Game 2 – Hope International 9, Park Gilbert 1

The Buccaneers jumped out in front first in this game, plating a run in the first. Danielle Farinas reached on an errant throw by the Royals and then scored when Noelle Gum doubled over the left fielders head.

The Royals answered back in the second as they scored three unearned runs and then chased Nerey with five in the third. Only two of the five runs allowed by Nerey were earned. Nerey, who is still getting her pitching legs back after an extended absence still had an effective day.

The Bucs put together four hits for the game as Gumm, Ledezma Romero, Sorcha Walker and Bri Jackson all had hits. Jackson and Gumm's hits were for extra bases.

Nerey drops to 1-1 on the season.

The Bucs return to action in a week on Thursday, February 15th when they host OUAZ at Arizona Athletic Grounds. Games are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
