The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team fell in overtime 66-63 to Simpson University in Redding, Calif. The Bucs losing streak now hits three as they come down the stretch run in their attempt to make the Cal Pac Basketball Tournament in early March.
The Buccaneers got off to a strong start leading the game by 10 after the first quarter and by 11 at the half. Park shot 62 percent from the floor in the first quarter, but their shooting percentage went down in each successive quarter and overtime.
Simpson shot under 30 percent in the first half, but turned things around in the second half, shotting 54 percent in the third quarter to cut the lead to three and then 40 percent in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Buccaneers did not trail once during regulation and the first time the score was tied was with 3:47 to go when a Redhawk three-pointer tied the game at 59. Park shot 27 percent from the floor in the final frame which aided Simpson in its comeback.
In overtime, Park did not make a bucket from the field, going 0-6 and after going 11-14 (79 percent) from the free throw line in regulation, shot 2-8 (25 percent) in overtime which proved costly in a three-point loss.
Individually, Kayla Schroeder led the squad with 21 points, while Jayla Reliford had 11 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.
With the loss tonight the Bucs have dropped to fifth place in the conference standings but are still ahead of Westcliff who they own the tiebreaker with due to winning both head-to-head matchups. The Bucs just need one more win to clinch a trip back to UC Merced for the postseason tournament. The Bucs now return home to close out the regular season against Cal Maritime and Pacific Union, two teams they have never lost to and won by 19 and 21 points respectively earlier this season.
