Prescott, Ariz. – The Park University Gilbert Buccaneers concluded their run in the California Pacific Conference softball tournament in a 6-3 loss against the Warriors of Westcliff University on Saturday afternoon.
The Buccaneers struggled against Westcliff throughout the season, dropping to them on senior night and during the first round of the Cal Pac tournament.
During the elimination round, Park was able to bounce back with a 10-4 win over the Pioneers of Antelope Valley. Raylissa Garcia hit a two RBI single in the second inning to give the squad an early lead. Mariah Martinez locked in with a solid five innings pitched. She allowed one run off five hits to help the Buccaneers stay alive.
Day two presented the Bucs with a matchup against Simpson University. If extra innings wasn't stressful enough, both teams battled it out until the very end. Once again, it was Garcia with a game winning two RBI double to give Park the last minute one run lead. They found themselves advancing after defeating the Redhawks by a tight score of 14-13.
Park found themselves face to face with Westcliff once again in the last round of competition before the championship game. The Warriors put five runs on the board by the top of the fourth frame with the Buccaneers sneaking two in the bottom of the third. Ledezma Romero and Martinez both chipped in with an RBI single to bring the run deficit to three. Stellar pitching from Westcliff's Nina Hendricks kept Park out of scoring territory as she went on to strike out four batters and allow one run on two hits.
Regardless of the result, the Buccaneers took the program to new heights and broke numerous personal and team records. It is only a matter of months before the team returns to the field in hopes of being the first conference winners in Park Gilbert softball history.
