Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB Season in Peril After Loss at Westcliff

The Park University Gilbert women's basketball teams held its destiny in its own hands entering tonight's contest with Westcliff. But after losing a 71-63 decision to the Warriors, the Bucs are on the brink of their season being over. Their destiny is now in the hands of Westcliff. Park is now 12-13 on the season and 10-9 in conference play.

Park Gilbert has to beat Saint Katherine on Sunday afternoon to start. If they accomplish this feat, then they will sit and watch to see if Westcliff can send them to the tournament by beating Benedictine Mesa Sunday night.

This was a close contest throughout the first half with neither team taking control. The Bucs had a smack four-point advantage at the end of the first quarter and a two-point lead at the half.

The third quarter is where Westcliff took control of the game. Park Gilbert was up four 41-37 with a little over six minutes to play in the third. Westcliff then went on a 19-4 run over the next four and a half minutes to take an 11 point lead and never trailed again.  The Bucs cut it to eight by the end of quarter, but the damage was done.

Park was never able to get the score closer than seven points in the fourth quarter and now have to regroup to play on Sunday.

The Bucs shot 34.8 percent from the floor. The Bucs have only one two times all year when they shoot below 40 percent from the floor. The also shot a paltry 17 percent from three-point range.

The Bucs were bolstered by the unexpected return of Madison Chappell who was thought to be done for the season just a week ago after injuring her shoulder. She showed no ill effects from the injury posting 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Macy Markus had 18 points as she played all 40 minutes. Jazmyne Jenkins battled foul trouble throughout the game only playing 18 minutes and pulling down nine rebounds. Jayla Reliford had 12 points and five assists on the night.

The season is on the line on Sunday, February 19 as the Bucs still face a must win situation as they play Saint Katherine at 3 p.m. Arizona in San Marcos, Calif. If the Bucs win, the season is on the line as Westcliff takes on Benedictine Mesa 6:30 p.m. Arizona time.
