The Park University Gilbert women's soccer team got a key conference win over Antelope Valley tonight 1-0 at Legacy Sports Park in Mesa, Ariz. The Buccaneers move to 5-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the California Pacific Conference, good for 13 points and they sit in a tie for fifth with Benedictine Mesa.
The Buccaneers dominated play in the first half with 11 shots (8 on goal) as they took a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. They limited the Pioneers to two shots (1 on goal). Emma Alvarez led the way posting the only tally for the Bucs, her seventh goal of the season on four shots with three of them being saved by UAV net minder Michelle Silva. Alvarez continues expand her school record goal mark.
The second half turned into a number of missed opportunities for both teams as the Bucs added nine more shots with four more save by Silva. Antelope Valley had two golden opportunities to tie the game with one shot ricocheting off the cross bar and another shot by Dulce Avalos went wide left when she was right in front of the goal with nothing between her and a tie game.
Park Gilbert applied pressure all game with 10 corner set piece opportunities but were not able to take advantage.
Alvarez led the way with seven shots (4 on goal). Leigha Richie, Mya Mudry and Hallie Thompson each had two shots.
The Bucs now travel to Pasadena California, to take on Providence Christian at 12:30 p.m. in another key match with conference playoff implications.
