Game Recap: Softball |

Buccaneers Finish Season Against Embry-Riddle

The Park University Gilbert softball team finished their 2022 season in Prescott, Ariz. with two losses to No. 24 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). The Buccaneers finished the program's third season with a 14-28 overall record and 12-20 conference record. At 11-11, this is the second season in a row that they ended the season with a .500 home record.

Game 1: Embry-Riddle 8, Park Gilbert 1

Before the Buccaneers could skid across one run, the Eagles scored seven. They scored in all but one inning, forcing head coach Karin Gadberry to exhaust her bullpen, as Payton Priefer (3 IP), Abril Nerey (2 IP) and Aubrey Bartlet (1 IP) all entered the circle.

The Buccaneers narrowly avoided a shutout with a lone run in the sixth inning. Anissa Corrales hit a leadoff double and scored when Raylissa Garcia hit a two-out single.

The game also saw the return of Nadia Gutierrez, who has been dealing with a hand injury; she played as the designated fielder in short.

Game 2: Embry-Riddle 10, Park Gilbert 1

Once again, Corrales notched a leadoff hit and scored on a single by Garcia. That allowed the Buccaneers to get on the board in the first, but the Eagles scored the 10 runs between the second and fourth innings to win via run-rule.

The Buccaneers' best opportunity to make a dent in the Eagles' lead came in the second innings, when Zofia Corral and Danni Garcia were both hit by a pitch, but the inning's other three batters went down on strikes.

In their final appearances as Buccaneers, Gabby Vallee and Jessica Mendoza split the pitching reps. After a lights-out performance yesterday, Vallee was pulled during a four-run second and Mendoza threw the final 2.2, as the Eagles finished things off.

Corrales, who went 2-3 with a run, was the only Buccaneer in either game today to record multiple hits.
