Game Recap: Baseball |

Big Innings Lead Buccaneers To Wins Over Simpson

Behind two fantastic offensive performances, the Park University Gilbert baseball team extended their win streak to four games by taking two wins from Simpson by scores of 13-6 and 11-7.

Game 1: Park Gilbert 13, Simpson 6

Due to a scheduling error, game one started close to 90 minutes late. There is no way to know for certain if that affected the starting pitchers, but both gave up a flurry of runs around the midway point of the game.

The Buccaneers were scoreless in the first three, then exploded for 11 runs over the next three innings; seven of them came across in the decisive sixth inning. The big inning started with a leadoff double by Travis Moore. Moore scored on a fielder's choice by Joel Adamson, then Aaron Stinnett singled; they both scored off of a single to centerfield by Austin Chouinard.

The runs kept coming as Julian Garcia-Schroeder singled to score one. Then, DJ Downen singled to right field to score Garcia-Schroeder and pinch runner Mayson Rayburn. The Buccaneers worked their way through the order, as Moore drove Joey Martinez home on a fielder's choice for the inning's final run.

Connor Barton, who relieved starter Nick Marcon the inning prior, threw the final four, one-hit innings and picked up his third win of the season.

To make the 13-run affair even more impressive, all nine Buccaneers' starters reached base; eight of them had a hit. Garcia-Schroeder led the way with a three hit, four run, one RBI and one walk performance.

Game 2: Park Gilbert 11, Simpson 7

The Buccaneers' contagious hitting carried over into the day's second game, as they opened things up with a five-run inning. Alex Stinnett got things started with an RBI-double to score his brother, Aaron.

Then, the Simpson starter struggled to find the zone. Alex scored on a wild pitch before he walked the next three batters; the final walk to Moore scored Garcia-Schroeder. Aaron Lizarraga drove in the final two runs (DJ Downen and Joey Martinez) with a single to left center.

Four more runs came across in the fourth inning when Joel Adamson hit an RBI single and scored himself, thanks to a double by Chouinard. Alex Stinnett brought home pinch runner Chris Amador, and Lizarraga scored on a wild pitch.

Buccaneers' starter Luke Richards scattered four runs in five innings, but was awarded the win thanks to the nine runs of support he received while the active pitcher.

Armed with a big lead and a full arsenal of relievers at his disposal, head coach Kelly Stinnett turned to his bullpen to finish off the game. Frank Racioppo threw a three up, three down seventh but worked into trouble in the eighth as the Redhawks got across five runs.

With the bases loaded, Kelly Stinnett turned to his closer, Diego Bustillos- making his first appearance this season after nursing an arm injury. Bustillos got the Buccaneers out of jam and wiggled his way out of danger in the final frame to pick up the save.

What's Next: The Buccaneers pick things up with Simpson tomorrow at 1 p.m. in another doubleheader at Tempe Diablo Stadium's minor league complex. The first game of the doubleheader will count as a conference game, while the second will be considered non-conference.
