Game Recap: Baseball |

Buccaneers Fall to Benedictine Mesa, Clarke

After two impressive wins over No. 23 Benedictine Mesa in which the Park University Gilbert baseball team produced 28 runs, they were unable to recreate that magic in today's makeshift doubleheader.

Because Friday's contest against the Redhawks was postponed due to rain, it was rescheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium, ahead of the Bucs' scheduled game against Clarke. The Buccaneers fell to Benedictine Mesa, 3-0, and Clarke, 8-1.

Game One- Benedictine Mesa 3, Park Gilbert 0

Through seven innings, it was a pitcher's duel with neither side fixed to blink.

For the Buccaneers, Luke Richards got the start and dealt six, scoreless innings- only relinquishing six hits. Richards pitched into a bind in the second inning; two Redhawks' singles put runners on first and second with one out, but Richards was able to force a groundout double play to end the inning.

Richards kept the Redhawks at bay, but the Buccaneers were unable to carry over momentum from yesterday's combined 33-hit performance. They could only muster up three against them on Sunday. Two of those hits came from Alex Stinnett; the other came from Joaquin Martinez.

The ice cold bats and a struggling bullpen proved to be a fatal combination for the Buccaneers, as the Redhawks got three runs across in the seventh and eighth innings. Aaron Lizarraga, who had not allowed a run in either of his two appearances prior to today, surrendered two. Logan White came in in the eighth to get the final out, but gave up one run before doing so.

Game Two- Clarke 8, Park Gilbert 1

The hitting woes continued into the day's second game against Clarke, as the Buccaneers managed just four hits. Two of them came from the leadoff man, Chris Amador, who also stole a base, but he was unable to knock in or score a run.

DJ Downen and Joel Adamson accounted for the other two hits. Both came in the second inning after the Pride put up three runs when the Buccaneers threatened to make some noise for the only time that day. Austin Chouinard drew a lead off walk, Downen doubled and Cade Maestas walked to load the bases with one out.

The lone Buccaneers' run made it across when the first baseman fell and Joel Adamson was credited with an RBI single that scored Enrique Figueroa, who courtesy ran for Chouinard. But that run came after the Pride got three runs off of the Bucs' starter Paxton Prentice in the top of the second.

Those three runs were more than enough to put down the Buccaneers on Sunday. Prentice's short outing led head coach Kelly Stinnett to exhaust his bullpen. Five pitchers took the mound, but the most surprising substitution came when Matthew Armendariz entered the game in the ninth inning. Armendariz, who normally plays second base, made his collegiate pitching debut and threw the ball well. He went three up, three down on nine pitches and registered a strike out.

What's Next: The Buccaneers travel about 90 minutes south of campus on Tuesday to take part in the Tucson Invitational at Kino Sports Complex. At 10 a.m., they play Jamestown and at 1:30 p.m., they play Bemidji State.
