Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Falls at La Sierra

The Park University Gilbert volleyball team coming off its first loss in the 17 conference games, lost its second in a row, this time dropping a 3-0 decision (28-30, 16-25, 22-25) to La Sierra University on Thursday evening in Riverside, Calif.

The Buccaneers (5-5, 4-2) controlled play throughout the match, leading the Eagles (8-3, 5-1) in kills 37-33 and in attempts (117-97), but in what has become an all to familiar refrain this season the Buccaneers were undone by their errors committing 31 attack errors for the match to only 13 for the Eagles.

"We beat ourselves tonight," said Buccaneers head coach Clay Webb. "We are better than what we showed, and I expect we will come back with a better performance tomorrow."

The first set saw the Bucs outkill the Eagles 16-11, but Park committed the same number of errors as the LSU had kills. The Bucs were down five points on multiple occasions before working the score back to a tie at 20-all. From there it was a back-and-forth affair with the Buccaneers holding three sets points in the set before ultimately dropping the frame 30-28.

Park had a letdown after the disappointment of the first set, posting a negative hitting percentage in dropping set two 25-16. The Buccaneers almost had more errors (10) in the set then the Eagles had kills (11).

The Bucs out hit the Eagles once again in the third set 14-11, but they never held the lead or were even tied in the set. Ten attack errors were their undoing once again as they fell in the final frame 25-22.

Amanda Jonovich was the only Buccaneer in double digits in kills with 14 on the evening to go along with nine digs. Hattie Patton led the team with 13 digs. Melissa Blockey and Annika Wallace had 15 and 11 assists respectively in sharing setting duties.

Fortunately, the Bucs have an opportunity to wash the bad taste of this match away tomorrow night as they take on Antelope Valley (2-7, 2-3) at 7 p.m. in the second match of this three-match California trip. This will be the first match between the two programs.
