After a thrilling five set win over Saint Katherine to open up Cal Pac Conference play, the Park University Gilbert volleyball team took the momentum of that win and used it to cruise to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-22) win over Marymount California (1-8, 0-2 Cal Pac) in Torrance, Calif on Friday evening.
The Bucs (3-3, 2-0) were playing once again without the services of setter Jenifer Lauer who was injured prior to the match against Saint Katherine. The first set saw a back-and-forth battle early in the set. Then with the Buccaneers leading 13-11, the Buccaneers went on a 12-6 run to win the first set 25-17.
In set two, the Buccaneers had a early lead before letting it slip away momentarily. After leading 9-7 Marymount went on 6-1 run to take a 13-10 lead. But this lead was short lived as the Park then went on a 12-0 run with Makayla Simmons serving before Marymount was to get a point. The Bucs would finish on a 15-2 run to end the set. The only two points the Mariners were able to muster during the Bucs run were on service errors buy the Buccaneers.
Set three saw both teams tying or exchanging the lead 15 times over the set. Every time one team looked as though they had momentum, the other team had an answer. Then with the Bucs trailing 18-16, the Bucs went on an 8-2 run to make the score 24-20. After a Mariner ace and a Bucs attack error cut the lead to two, the Buccos went to the reigning Cal Pac Player of the Year to seal the match away. Miranda Bacon hit a cross court cut shot around the block to finish the match.
With the win, the Bucs have now won 14 straight Cal Pac matches. Of those 14 wins, this is only the fifth straight set triumph. Park owns a 14-1 record since joining the Cal Pac and has an 18-6 mark against Cal Pac teams in their three-year history.
The Buccaneers finish their three match road trip tomorrow at high noon against Westcliff University. Park owns a 1-0 record against the Warriors winning 3-1 in Gilbert back in 2019.
