The Park University Gilbert baseball team dropped their fifth game in a row in a non-conference contest against No. 17 Benedictine-Mesa 13-2 at Gene Autry Park in Mesa, Ariz. This is the second consecutive loss to the Redhawks in the last week for the Buccaneers.
The contest can by summed up in one word, errors. Park Gilbert committed seven of them on the evening which made things much easier for the Redhawks. The game got off to a good start though, the Buccaneers scored single runs in the first and second innings. In the first, Alex Stinnett walked and Joel Adamson singled to left to get things started. Then back-to-back walks scored Stinnett and chased Redhawks starting pitcher Evan Appenzeller.
The Redhawks answered with two runs in the bottom of the first behind three hits off of Bucs starter Conner Barton (1-1). In the second, a Stinnett triple scored second baseman Andre Avalos who had reached on a fielders choice earlier in the inning.
The Redhawks tied the game in the bottom of the second to retake the lead, then exploded for five runs in both the third and fourth inning to close out the scoring for the game. Matthew Medina, Chase Provencio and Tyler Droke threw three innings of scoreless ball to close out the game, but the Buc bats could not generate any offense to mount a comeback.
The Buccaneers now return to conference play as they host La Sierra this weekend in the four-game set. The first three games will be conference games with the final contest on Sunday being a non-conference affair. It will start with a double header on Friday starting at 11 a.m. and a single game on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. first pitch. The final game on Sunday will also start at 11 a.m. All four games will be played at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, Ariz., and live streamed on the Buccaneers YouTube and Facebook channels.
