WBB Falls in Exhibition at Division I Grand Canyon

The Park University Gilbert women's basketball team played its last exhibition game against NCAA Division I opponents tonight as it dropped a 98-48 decision to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Buccaneers (4-3)  held a three-point lead early, but they were facing the No. 1 team in the country at the Division I level in forcing turnovers.  The Antelopes (5-1) turned up the defensive intensity and forced the Bucs into 31 turnovers which turned into 44 'lopes points.  Without its starting backcourt and backup point guard, the Park offense sputtered to gain any momentum.

When the Bucs were in their offense sets they shot the ball well, hitting on 50 percent of their shots in the first half. The percentage came down after halftime, but finished the game at 41 percent.

The Bucs were also hurt on the glass. GCU outrebounded the Bucs by 14 overall, but had 11 more boards on the offensive glass which led to 14 second chance points.

The Buccaneers were led offensively by junior Macy Markus who had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Allison Hadaway posted her Park career high with 10 points. Haley Valencia had nine points and five rebounds as she impressed with her ability to get to the rim with a variety of post moves.

The Bucs now return to NAIA action for the remainder of the year as they have seven non-conference games left in the month of December before starting Cal Pac play in January.  It starts this Saturday as the Buccaneers travel back to Phoenix to take on SAGU-AIC at 2 p.m.
