Bucs VB Wins Another Five-Set Thriller

The Park University Gilbert volleyball team could have had a let down after upsetting the 25th ranked team in the country just two nights ago. But the one thing that kept that from happening was their opponent for tonight's match, Benedictine Mesa. Coming into tonight's contest at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, the Bucs and Redhawks had played eight matches and the series was tied 4-4. Six of the previous eight matches went four or five sets including the last five in a row. Tonight was no different as the Buccaneers (9-5, 8-2) beat the Redhawks (7-13, 4-6) 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13) to take a 5-4 lead in the overall series and win the season series with the Redhawks.

"This team never blinks," said Buccaneers Head Coach Clay Webb. "Benedictine is such a good team and if you are not on top of your game they will make you pay. Every time we won a set they had an answer, but we kept battling and found a way to play our best when it mattered most."

Park Gilbert jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-21 first set triumph. The Bucs hit .333 for the set with 11 kills and only two errors. The Redhawks came right back in the second set to hit over .300 themselves as they won the set comfortably 25-16. Seven attack errors undid the Buccaneers in the second frame.

The see-saw battle continued in the third set as 16 kills to only three errors helped the Buccos hit almost .500 for the set as they pulled out a 25-20 win. Benedictine also had a solid set, hitting well over .300 just to keep the set close.

Set four saw an uptick in errors from the Buccaneers as they committed almost as many attack errors in this set (nine) as they had in the previous two sets combined (10). With those errors, they handed the Redhawks an easy 25-18 penultimate set win.

Park Gilbert had to go to a fifth set for the sixth time this year. Coming into the match, The Bucs were 5-0 and have won in about every manner possible. In the first four wins the Bucs had to win sets four and five to pull out the match. In their last match, they had to overcome losing the fourth set. Tonight was a similar situation as the Bucs lost set four and had to regroup to come away with victory.  They were able to do just that as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead. But the Redhawks battled back to tie it at 7-7 before the Bucs went on a 7-2 run to make the score 14-9 and seemingly was going to finish the match handily. But the Redhawks would not go away, going on a 4-0 run before an Elizabeth Clemit kill put the finishing touches on another Buccaneer triumph.

Miranda Bacon led the Bucs in kills for the second match in a row with 16, while hitting .250. Amanda Jonovich posted another double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Jonovich who hit negatively in the match with Embry Riddle, hit .355 on the night. Clemit continued to be a force in the middle with nine kills and only one error as she continued her great week. Annika Wallace posted her second straight 30+ assist night dishing out 33 dimes.

The Buccaneers return to host three matches against the Cal Pac North Division next week as the will face Simpson (Oct. 21, 6p.m.), UC Merced (Oct. 22, 6 p.m.) and Pacific Union (Oct. 23 7:30 p.m.). The Bucs are a combined 7-0 against those teams. The first two games will be held at the Arizona Region Volleyball Facility in Chandler, Ariz., and the last match with the Pioneers will be played at the Inspire Courts in Gilbert, Ariz.

Game Notes:

-The Buccaneers have now won four straight matches against Benedictine after the Redhawks had won four in a row against the Bucs.

- The Buccaneers are now 6-0 in five set matches this year and are 9-0 in five set matches the last two years. The last five set match the Bucs lost was in their inaugural year to Benedictine Mesa. They were 0-2 in five set matches that year.

- The Cal Pac Arizona Division (Park Gilbert, Embry Riddle and Benedictine Mesa) is 17-4 against the other Cal Pac volleyball divisions, and has a combined 21-9 record in conference, setting the standard as the best division in the Cal Pac. No other Division has more than 14 wins combined.
