Box Score GILBERT, Ariz. – In other sports this year between Park University Gilbert and Park University, the new kid on the block has taken on the old veteran and most of the time, the veteran has come out on top. But this was the first time for the two Park University schools to meet in softball. This time, the young Bucs (Park Gilbert) outlasted the old sea dogs (Park Pirates) 12-10 in a high scoring affair at Cactus Yards.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a commanding nine run lead after posting a 10-run second inning. They sent 15 batters to plate had five hits, were helped by three Pirate miscues, four walks and a hit batter. The big blast was a three-run homer by Michele Dinicola who crushed a ball to center for her second home run in as many days.
The Pirates then started to chip away at the Bucs lead and there had to be thoughts of relinquishing another large lead like they did yesterday against the University of St. Mary. But this time, they held their resolve and added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth which was needed as the visitors from Parkville plated two more runs in the top of the seventh to cut the margin to two before the Buccaneers were able to close things out.
Gabby Vallee went the distance in the circle to pick up her fifth win on the season (5-4).
At the plate, Dinicola and Danae Villareal continues to stay hot, the junior center fielder racked up three more hits and drove in three more runs while Villareal recorded another two-hit day with three more RBI's. Villareal and Dinicola lead the Bucs with 22 and 18 RBI's respectively.
On day two of the Sterling Softball Scramble, Park Gilbert will take on Dawson Community College at 11:30 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. rematch with these same Pirates.
