SURPRISE, Ariz. – Despite a 20-20 double-double from Eric Patten, The Park University Gilbert Men's Basketball team dropped a 104-75 game at Ottawa University (Ariz.) this evening at The Faith Arena in Surprise, Ariz.
"It is hard to win when you come into hostile environments," said Park University Gilbert head coach Gordon Stubblefield. "That is a solid basketball team we played tonight. We were off and they made us pay for it."
Poor defense and turnovers really hurt the Buccaneers (7-18) tonight as the they coughed the ball up 21 times which led to 29 points off turnovers and 46 fast break points for the Spirit. The Bucs also allowed the Spirit to shoot 58 percent from the floor including 54 points in the paint.
"You have to be able to get stops," said Stubblefield. "We have done a good job of making comebacks when we have been down this year, but we just couldn't put stops together and it got away from us."
Offensively, Patten did all he could to keep Park Gilbert in the contest with a Herculean performance, scoring 20 points and corralling 21 rebounds (11 offensive). Ethan Wallace also chipped in 17 points only missing one shot (7-8) from the floor all night.
"I can't say enough about the effort of those two men tonight," said Stubblefield. "They gave everything they had and then some to try and keep us in the game."
The Buccaneers return to the court at home at "the Nest" on Wednesday, February 12 when they take on American Indian College at 7 p.m. in the second half of a double header with the women's team who plays AIC at 5 p.m.
