Just like death and taxes, there are two things you can count on from the Park Univeristy Gilbert women's basketball team of late. A strong second half and a scoring frenzy from freshman guard Elise Young. Like clockwork, those two things took place this evening as the Buccaneers (7-11) outscored Saint Katherine (4-11) 36-26 in the second half to take a 67-57 win to secure their second win in their last three games.
"I was proud of how we handled their style of play," said Park University Gilbert coach Jeff Fore. "They play kind of a helter-skelter type of basketball which can be hard to handle for such a young team."
Initially, their unorthodox style kept the game close as the two teams were tied 31-31 heading to the locker rooms at halftime. But as has been the case of late, the Bucs came out and behind their budding star Young, built a 12-point lead with four minutes remaining in the game.
But young and inexperienced teams like to make things difficult for themselves. This team is no different. Turnovers and a couple of missed assignments on the defensive end allowed the Firebirds to cut the lead to three. But the young Bucs showed their resolve and staved off the Saint Katherine comeback to extend the lead with a pair of field goals and knocking down their free throws from the charity stripe to seal the win.
The irrepressible Young continued her steller shooting, scoring 30 points or more for the second consecutive game.
"I can't say enough about Elise Young," said Fore. "Her ability to create her own shot is impressive. We are fortunate she chose to come play for us."
The Buccaneers return to the court on Saturday, January 18 as they take on SAGU-American Indian University at 12 p.m. at the Nest.
