The Park University baseball team closed the regular season with a 10-9 non-conference loss against Arizona Christian University this evening at Greenway High School in Glendale, Ariz. The Bucs finished the regular season at 22-24 but now get to prepare for its first postseason in school history.
The Bucs jumped out to seven run lead after scoring eight runs in the first two innings. The Bucs got on the board with two runs in the top of the first on an RBI double by Gino Caperon and an RBI single from Diego Bejarano.
After ACU scored one run in its half of the first, the Bucs exploded for six runs in the second on two home runs. Caleb Rozier hit a three run homer and Diego Bejarano hit his first career home run. Quite the feat for Bejarano, a senior playing in his last regular season game of his career.
But the Buc bats went silent in innings three through eight. Only mustering five hits over six innings after posting seven in the first two.
Meanwhile, the Firestorm slowly chipped away at the Bucs lead scoring three runs in the second, and solo runs in the third and fourth innings. They would take the lead for good in the sixth with four runs off of Park Gilbert reliever Angel Heredia.
The Bucs had a chance to tie the game in the ninth as they had three hits to score their ninth run and had the tying run at second with the top of the order coming up. But both Rozier and Brendan Blakeman went down on strikes to end the game.
Five Buccaneers had multi-hit games led by Nick Miller with three. Bejarano had four RBI a career high.
Park Gilbert used eight arms to get through the game with Aiden Guthrey, Ivri Margolin, Diego Bellozo-Pacheco and Adrian Gamez not allowing a run in their time on the mound.
The Buccaneers now get ready for their first trip to the postseason with a first round game in the California Pacific Conference Championships next Wednesday, May 1 at 9 a.m. The Bucs will not have to travel far to play as they tournament is being held at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz., just a mere 15 minutes from campus.
Park Gilbert is the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 seed Westcliff who they split two games with during the season. The winner of the game will face off with top seed and host Benedictine Mesa at 4 p.m. with the loser playing an elimination game against the loser of the 2/3 game between Embry Riddle and Simpson at 7:30 p.m.
