Box Score The Park University Gilbert baseball team, used another strong pitching performance from Junior Flores and 14 hits to pound out an 11-5 win over SAGU-AIC today at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz. The Bucs are now 5-6 on the season.
The Bucs got off to a solid start with solo runs in each of the first four innings. They probably felt as though they left some off the board as they stranded five runners in those four innings. Flores, the junior from the University of New Mexico kept the Warriors off balance allowing only one run in 5.0 innings of work. Flores has only allowed one run in his last 11 innings on the bump and had his scoreless inning streak snapped at nine when SAGU plated a run in the fourth.
Flores was in line for the win as he left with a 4-1 lead. But the Warriors tied the game off of reliever DJ Martin who surrendered three runs in his one inning of work in the sixth.
Martin should give a hearty thanks to his battery mate, catcher Andrew Allanson who gave the Bucs the lead right back in the bottom of the sixth with a majestic, no doubt, two-run homer to right field.
The Bucs were not done scoring as they blew the game open with a five-run eighth inning to give reliever Josh Leckey some breathing room, not that he needed it.
Leckey picked up his first career save in relief of Martin by throwing the last three innings, allowing just one unearned run in the ninth after an error started the inning. He only allowed two hits and struck out four. Martin (1-0) picked up his first win of the season.
Five Bucs had five players with multi-hit games, led by third baseman Nick Miller who returned to the lineup after missing last weekends series with an injury. Miller was 3-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Allanson, Brendan Blakeman, Jesh Leckey and Gino Caperon all had two hits. Allanson and Caleb Rozier each had two RBI.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon in a double header in Phoenix, Ariz., at Sunnyslope High School. SAGU-AIC will be the home team for the two games slated to start at 2 and 5:30 p.m. Please note, there will not be a live stream or live stats for the two games tomorrow.
