MESA, Ariz. --- The Park University Gilbert men's soccer team (7-6-4, 5-4-4) took care of business Thursday night on home turf, defeating the Benedictine University Mesa Redhawks (6-8-3, 5-5-3) by a score of 3-1 at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz.
The Buccaneers keep their postseason hopes alive, as they now must win their final match this Saturday in order to clinch a spot in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference tournament.
Park-Gilbert's offense took a total of five shots on the night, efficiently converting three into scores.
Senior defenseman
Sam Fowles was the first player to find the back of the net in the 25
th minute, when he was set up with a pass from junior midfielder
Ryan Masterson. Four minutes later, junior midfielder
Havard Brynie netted his sixth goal of the season with freshman defenseman
Noah Yalu assisting on the play.
Roughly 10 minutes before the halftime break, BENU scored its opening goal of the match from junior midfielder Shiloh Perez. Junior defenseman Edwin Arias recorded the assist.
After nearly 25 minutes of scoreless soccer in the second half, senior forward
Ashton Owen put the Bucs up 3-1 off a pass from junior defenseman
Marco Taiocchi.
Bucs sophomore goalkeeper,
Nicklas Lagesen, recorded five saves.
BENU recorded one yellow card while Park-Gilbert had three on the night.
Buccaneers men's soccer returns to the pitch one last time in the regular season, with a trip to the GSAC postseason on the line. They will host the Arizona Christian University Firestorm (6-7-4, 4-5-4) at Desert Sky Park in Gilbert, Ariz. this Saturday, Nov. 2
nd at 8:00 p.m. MST.
