Game Recap: Baseball |

Bucs Fall in Extra Innings in Season Opener

The prospects for the 2024 season are looking bright for the Park University Gibert baseball team despite a 7-6 loss in 10 innings to the College of Idaho in the first of a three-game series at Mesa Mountain View High School.

The bright spots? RHP KJ Ward fanned 11 batters in four innings, allowing three hits and three runs. The 11 strikeouts is the second most in a game in school history tying him with Aaron deGroot. deGroot also holds the all-time record at 15.

LHP Junior Flores was solid in his debut on the mound, starting the game and hurling the first three innings allowing one unearned run.

At the plate, third baseman Nick Miller went 3-4 with 2 RBI. Christian LaPierre went 2-4 with and RBI and Andrew Allanson showed easy power with an oppo home run.

The down side? Five errors which led to only five of the seven runs being earned.

College of Idaho got on the board first with an RBI single in the second.

The Bucs responded with two in the fourth on a Miller RBI single.

COI tied it in the seventh with a homer and then took the lead when the Bucs made two throwing errors to allow a run to come all the way around to score from first. The looked as though they bought some insurance with another homer. But the Buccaneers would not go away,

Now down 4-2, the Bucs cut it to one with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

In the eighth, Jesh Leckey tied the game with a single to score Anthony Marcone who doubled to start the inning. Then Leckey scored after two errors on the same play by COI to take the lead.

In the top of the ninth, COI was down to its final out with a runner on first, but a bad hop double down the left field line scored the tying run to send the game into extra innings.

COI scored two in the top half of the inning on a wild pitch and a single to take a two-run lead which they would hold onto in the bottom half of the inning despite a home run from Allanson to make it interesting,

Josh Leckey took the loss in his first relief appearance as a Buc.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon back on the Bucs home turf, Arizona Athletic Grounds at 4 p.m.
