The Park University Gilbert men's soccer team had its opening match against the University of Providence at home cancelled due to lightning. Today, the Buccaneers took to the road and found themselves up against a tough Hope International squad who took advantage of Park Gilbert being without a number of its starters in a 4-1 win over the Buccaneers at Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, Calif.
The Buccaneers fall to 0-1 on the season while HIU moves to 2-0.
The Buccaneers were down 2-0 at the half as HIU's Diego Lopez scored two goals less than three minutes apart.
Max Gross answered a minute into the second half with a goal on a free kick. But the Bucs could not muster any more scoring and Lopez completed the hat trick three minutes later to essentially put the game away. The Royals tacked on the fourth goal with just under five minutes to go in the game.
HIU managed 17 shots to only 10 for Park, but the Royals were economical scoring four times on six shots on goal.
The game was physical as their were 17 fouls and two yellow cards between the two teams.
Offensively, Oliver Haaland, Austin Murray and Havard Brynie all had two shots and one SOG for the game.
Andrew Powell making his first start in goal had two saves.
Park Gilbert returns to Arizona, but stays on the road as travel to Glendale, Ariz., to take on Arizona Christian on Thursday, August 24 at 8 p.m. The Firestorm beat the Bucs last season 2-1 in a close contest at Legacy Sports Park. Â
