Bucs Drop Double Dip to College of Idaho

The Park University Gilbert baseball team drop a pair of games to the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho this afternoon 15-8 and 11-2. The Bucs fall to 3-4 here early in the season.

In game one, the Bucs jumped out in front 2-0 after Joaquin Martinez was hit by a pitch and Connor Hommes was walked. They both advanced on a ground out and then Martinez scored on another ground out by Travis Moore and Hommes scored on an error.

The Coyotes answered right back with two in the bottom of the second and four in the third off Bucs starter Shaun Atamanchuk. Those six runs chased the Bucs ace, but did not stop the Coyotes offensive onslaught.

Brad Goodwin made his Park debut but struggled with his control, walking five batters as he gave up four runs in his two innings of work.

Down 9-2, the Bucs attempted to mount a comeback as the scored three in the fifth as two walks and two hit by pitch got things going. Aaron Stinnett scored on a passed ball and Cade Maestas drove in two with a single to cut the lead to four.

The Bucs would had solo runs in the sixth, seventh to cut the deficit to three, 10-7, with the run in the sixth coming from a home run off the bat of Brendan Blakeman making his Park Gilbert debut. Unfortunately, a five-spot in the bottom of the eighth for COI doomed the comeback bid.

Diego Bejarano went 2-4 with two runs scored, while Travis Moore also added two knocks in three at-bats with three RBI. Stinnett had his six-game hitting streak dating back to last season snapped in the contest. Maestas extended his hitting streak to five games.

Atamanchuk took the loss to fall to 0-1, he had a no-decision in his first outing last weekend versus Ottawa (Ariz.).

The Buc bats could not get going in game number two and the Coyotes jumped out early scoring 11 runs in the first four innings.

Park Gilbert starter Paxton Prentice only threw two plus innings as he gave up seven runs (five earned) as he surrendered four hits and walked two. He was relieved by DJ Martin who threw the next four innings. He allowed the last four runs in the third and fourth innings before settling in and holding the Yotes scoreless in the fifth and sixth. Reagan Reynolds threw two scoreless innings to close things out.

The Bucs were close to being run ruled as they were down 11-0 headed into the top of the seventh. But doubles by Logan Livingston and Joel Adamson, plus a RBI ground out by Austin Chouinard cut the deficit to nine and kept the game going until the end.

Prentice (0-1) takes the loss, his first of the season as he had a no-decision last Sunday against Kansas Wesleyan.

Adamson and Livingston had multi hit games for the Bucs. Chouinard had his eight-game hitting streak dating back to last season snapped.

These same two teams will meet again in another double header tomorrow afternoon with the first game starting a noon and the second contest 20-30 minutes after the completion of the first game. Probable starters have not been announced for the Bucs for the two games.
