Bucs Fall in Close Game at ACU

The Park University Gilbert baseball team stepped on to the field for a game which counted towards the standings for the first time in 17 days as the Buccaneers lost to Arizona Christian 7-6 in a tight contest at Glendale High School in Glendale, Ariz. The Buccaneers fall to 2-10 on the season.

The Buccaneers jumped on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning on two bases loaded walks. Alex Stinnett and Austin Chouinard got things going with back to back walks, followed by an Austin Chouinard single to load the bases. Cade Maestas then worked the third free pass in the inning to score the first run. Then with two outs Michael Rodriguez walked to score the second run.

ACU answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a double to cut the lead to one, then took the lead with two in the bottom of the second off Bucs started Shaun Atamanchuk who went five innings in his fourth start of the season.

The score remained 3-2 until the top of the six when the Bucs put a three-spot on the scoreboard on a three-run double by Joaquin Martinez. ACU seemed to have an answer every time the Bucs took a lead, however. The Firestorm tacked on three in the three of the their own in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead. 6-5.

The Bucs tied the game in the top half of the eighth on a throwing error scoring Chris Amador who had a triple earlier in the inning.

ACU got the run right back in the bottom of the eighth off of Bucs reliever Diego Jordan. A single and a Jordan error and wild pitch put the go ahead run on third before another single gave the Firestorm a one run lead heading into the ninth.

The Bucs could not make the comeback in the ninth as they went down 1-2-3 in the ninth,

Jordan takes the loss in his Bucs debut he is 0-1.

Despite scoring six runs the Bucs struggled at the plate only mustering four hits on the evening. Martinez led the way with two of those hits and three RBI.

On the mound Atamanchuk allowed five hits and three runs striking out five. Kyle Poapst struck out three in his only inning of work. Braeden Levandowski also made his Park debut this evening allowing two hits and three runs.

The Buccaneers now start Cal Pac Conference play this weekend as they travel to northern California to take on Simpson for a double header on Saturday March 4 and a single game on Sunday, March 5.
