Bucs Split DH With Coyotes

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Park University Gilbert Baseball team (11-18) split a double header with the College of Idaho (8-20) this afternoon, winning game one 4-3 in 10 innings, but fell in the nightcap 3-2.

Game 1 – Park 4, COI 3 – 10 innings

In game one, the Buccaneers had to come from behind to get the win.  They trailed 3-0 until the eighth inning when they were able to plate three runs to tie the game.  Matthew Armendariz and Austin Chouinard had RBI singles to drive in the first and third runs along with a balk which allowed the second run to score.

After a scoreless ninth, in the top half of the 10th with one out, Julian Garcia-Schroeder was hit by a pitch, then on a hit and run, Kelher Murfitt  hit a ball which ricocheted off the pitchers glove and all runners were safe after the Coyotes were able to corral the ball.  Then Chouinard was clutch again, getting a bloop single to center which allowed Garcia -Schroeder to come around to score with the go-ahead run.

Diego Bustillos came in and shut the door in the bottom half of the inning, although he decided to make it interesting by walking a batter and allowing a single before inducing a game ending 4-6-3 double play.  Bustillos picked up his team leading fifth save on the season.

Nic Villareal goes to 2-0 on the season as he threw five strong innings in relief and had his second consecutive impressive outing on the bump.  He allowed only two hits and one run, one walk and struck out three. Nevan Gillespie threw four innings to start allowing only two runs.  He gets a no-decision.

Game Note

- This was the first extra inning game in Park Gilbert baseball history

Game 2 – COI 3, Park 2

The Buccaneers jumped out on top 1-0 in this game on a Hugo Acosta single in the top of the first. The Coyotes answered with two in the third and one in the fifth.  Park Gilbert tried to make another come back but this one fell short as the Bucs left eight runners on base in the contest.

Freshman Matthew Medina (0-2) had a quality start, throwing six strong innings, allowing only three runs, scattering six hits and striking out three,. Frank Racioppo threw two scoreless innings in relief to give the Bucs a chance at a comeback.

Alex Moreno and Acosta each had two hits for the Buccaneers Bryce Beck had a sacrifice fly to drive home the other run.

The final game in the series is tomorrow morning starting at 11 a.m.  With daylight savings time changing tonight, Idaho and Arizona will be on the same time for the series finale from Wolfe Field.
